Making a Perfect Petit Dejeuner (French for breakfast)
Simply Delicious
The French are undoubtedly the giants of the gastronomic world. But when it comes to their breakfast they like to keep things nice and simple. Coffee, bread and something to spread is just about all that is needed. However, just because it's simple doesn't mean that there isn't an art to making it perfect.
A Fresh Start
The cornerstone to any French breakfast is plenty of delicious, fresh bread. Very fresh bread. Whether it's baguette, brioche or the family favourite croissant, if it isn't baked that morning, it shouldn't find its way onto any Gallic breakfast table. Children in particular love Pan au Chocolat or Pan au Raisin. But that doesn't mean the rest of us can't join in too.
Cafe Culture
If there's one thing our French friends know about it's coffee. At breakfast they tend to leave the stronger brews for later in the day and stick to a large bowl of Cafe au lait, which is made from equal parts espresso and milk. Just right for dipping that croissant in.
We're Jamming
Fresh bread is of course good enough to eat on its own. But in France they prefer to spread a little love on their morning meal. Butter and strawberry or apricot jam are favourites for eating with a baguette. Croissants on the other hand are eaten with just jam, or are dipped into a nice warm bowl of morning coffee.
